Mia's Story

Mia's family contacted me after receiving an arthritis diagnosis. After explaining that I do my therapies in the comfort of their home, the family expressed concern. Apparently Mia doesn't like strangers in her home! I still offered to do a consultation, see the situation, and go from there. When I arrived, Mia started barking and growling at me. Petting her right away would not be an option.....yet. The family again expressed concern that I wouldn't even be able to touch her, let alone massage her. I informed the family to stay focused on me, not Mia, and we'll see what happens. I told them that this is what I do and I am not worried or concerned. I would explain everything as I go. I continued discussing Mia's health with the family, all the while silently working on Mia's anxiety with a stranger in the house. She had stopped barking, but was weary of my every move. I explained that she will start barking again as I get on the floor, and to not be alarmed. Sure enough, she started barking and growling again. I went back to discussing her health with the family. I discovered that Mia was refusing a proper nutritional diet. I gave the family tips and tricks to get her back on track. About 30 minutes into the consultation, she finally took a tiny treat from me! She continued to calm as I slowly worked my way to a calming point I use on high-anxiety animals. Once she fully calmed, she allowed me to find her sources of pain. I even was able to work on her shoulders and back for a short time. The second session was even more successful! It only took 7 minutes before she calmed and I was able to fully work on her the remainder of that session! The third session completely amazed me! She allowed me to start working within 2 minutes of arriving. The amazing part? During the session, she showed me where she was hurting and wanted me to work, something most pets eventually learn with regular therapy. It is always so heartwarming to see one like Mia recognize who I am and what I am there to do, then proceed to tell me where they hurt. This brings me such joy and happiness! Mia now instantly recognizes me and I am able to work on her for a full session.
